Although the election is over and the inevitable has taken place, SFYR members got some great press in 2008. Here’s a rundown of the SFYR media coverage from this election cycle:
“Young Republicans Plan Future Outreach, Express Fears” from New America Media, November 6 (SFYRs Roger Eagleton, Anthony Garcia, Ed Sheppard, Harmeet Dhillon)
“Obama victory sparks dancing, cheering in S.F.” from the San Francisco Chronicle, November 6 (SFYR Ed Sheppard)
“SF Style Philes: Republican and Democratic election night parties” from SFGate.com, November 5 (SFYRs David Kralik, Ed Sheppard)
“San Francisco Reacts to President-Elect Obama” from KQED Radio, November 5 (SFYRs Jaimie Jensen, Ed Sheppard)
“San Francisco GOP Raises an Empty Glass” from SFweekly.com Blogs, November 4 (SFYR Catherine Carr)
“Mother Knows Best?” from Newsweek.com, October 27 (SFYR Sarah Heidkamp)

Volunteer of the Month: Ed Sheppard
Ed Sheppard, who moved to San Francisco two-years ago, is a proud supporter of Senator McCain. You will always find Ed wearing either a McCain shirt or button. He enjoys engaging in political discussions because it is a great way to find other San Franciscans who are overjoyed to find a like-minded thinker and others who are willing to debate in a civil manner. In two years, Ed has only encountered one “open-minded” individual who tried to take a bite out of Ed’s forearm because he did not agree with his politics.
Ed grew up in Philadelphia and spent his college years in Washington, DC. Upon graduation, he took a job in investment banking in San Francisco. Once he got a little free time, Ed sought to find other Republicans in San Francisco and got involved with the San Francisco Young Republicans. He really enjoyed the grassroots nature of the political activity, recalling that during the recent primary election, phone banking consisted of several McCain supporters getting together on a Saturday to use their free cell phone minutes to make calls to registered voters.
Ed has stepped up to be Deputy County Chair for the McCain campaign, where he will coordinate volunteer activities that will include phone banks consisting of more than “ a couple of guys with free cell phone minutes”! Ed has admired John McCain since the 2000 election citing his:
· Integrity
· Independent Thinking
· Military Record
Ed is also Campaign Manager for Harmeet Dhillon’s race for a seat in the California Assembly (District 13). He believes that Harmeet has a good opportunity because Tom Ammiamo is not particularly well liked. Likewise, Ed is optimistic that Nancy Pelosi’s lack of popularity, combined with votes that will go to Cindy Sheehan, will provide Dana Walsh with an opportunity in the race for the 8th District Seat in the US Congress. You will also find Ed cheering on Greg Conlon in his race for the 12th Congressional District seat and Conchita Applegate in her race for Assembly District 13.
San Francisco needs more young Republicans like Ed Sheppard!

Congratulations to SFYR members Walter D. Armer, James Kincaid, Sarah M. Vallette, John Brunello, Brooke Chappell, Harmeet K. Dhillon, Jennifer DePalma, and Alisa Farenzena for being elected to the San Francisco Republican Party! Although last month’s election turned out badly on the Proposition A, D, E, and H fronts, at least it was a good one for eight SFYR members, who will be working to shift public opinion on measures like those.
